The day after Thanksgiving I shot the annual Colorado vs. Nebraska game at Folsom Field up in Boulder for Icon SMI. I was mainly interested in covering the game because of one of Nebraska's star players, a defensive tackle named Ndamukong Suh. Suh was an All-American high school player in Portland, Ore. before being recruited to Nebraska by former coach Bill Callahan. Suh's father is originally from Cameroon and his mother is from Jamaica - a true American melting pot of cultures. And in case you were wondering, Ndamukong means "House of Spears" in the Ngema tribe in Cameroon.
Suh was dominating in his team's 28-20 victory over Colorado - constantly pressuring the quarterback in the backfield, stuffing the run and almost picking off a pass all while being doubled teamed by Colorado's offensive line most plays! The 300 pound defensive tackle has become a consensus All-American, a likely top pick in the upcoming NFL draft and one of five finalists for the 2009 Heisman Trophy. Suh would be only the second defensive player (Charles Woodson from Michigan was the one and only so far) to win the award and the first ever lineman if chosen on Saturday. The other candidates are are Alabama running back Mark Ingram, Stanford running back Toby Gerhart, Texas quarterback Colt McCoy and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow. While I'm not really a college football junkie it seems about time another defensive player especially one as dominate as Suh wins the award - maybe for his sake though he may not want to accept it considering the fate and lackluster careers of many of the past winners.
